Nearly all of the articles in this subject area are written jointly. Dr. J. – John Weissenberger – and Mr. K. – George Koch – currently write freelance columns for the National Post, Financial Post and Calgary Herald newspapers. Each of us has had a longstanding interest in provincial, federal and international politics (note we didn’t include local politics, which just make us mad). It’ll be obvious within the first three paragraphs of any of our political articles that we’re suspicious of big government and that we advocate political and economic freedom. In short, we’re conservatives.
While in his 20s Mr. K. worked as a political reporter for a news magazine, covering Alberta politics, and was subsequently the publication’s bureau chief in Ottawa for several years, where he observed Canada’s Parliament. During this five-year period he wrote hundreds of magazine articles. (Many of these were published in the pre-Internet era and won’t be available in the archive. However, Mr. K.’s mother clipped each and every article and dutifully assembled a series of scrap books, which are now collecting dust in Mr. K.’s basement.) In the early 90s Mr. K. also toiled briefly as a speechwriter for the leader of a national political party.
Dr. J. has been a political activist for more than 25 years, and his first-person political memories go back at least to the 1968 election. He’s been involved in almost every aspect of ground-level political organization, has run successful campaigns for seats in Canada ’s Parliament, and has managed a successful campaign for the leadership of a national political party. In 2004 Dr. J. was elected to the National Council (equivalent to the board of directors) of the Conservative Party of Canada.
