CBC exceeds itself

“Stephen Harper is on his annual trip to Canada’s arctic this week, a chance for Harper to wave the Conservative flag in the north…” -

Lead to a news story on CBC Radio One , read by Bernie McNamee

There are times when individuals, and even organizations make that extra effort and really exceed themselves. In ferreting out the news, the factual wheat from the chaff of worthless opinion, the Radio One newsroom reached new heights with this quote. Sorry, though not a real Stupidism, it does transcend CBC’s typical news coverage, and should be repeated.

We all fondly remember those many CBC investigative reports taking Jean Chretien to task for using the levers of power to benefit the Liberal Party. Then there was the relentless badgering of Paul Martin over his numerous cross-country trips, thinly disguised as government business, but actually just excuses to “wave the Liberal flag”.

Fortunately that commitment to vigilant, incisive journalism continues. How did the Prime Minister think he could dupe us with such cheap political tricks? “Not on our watch!” says Radio One.

This may sound corny coming from an old hard-boiled egg like me but, darn, it kind of restores your faith in the media. Hats off to you, CBC. Go ahead, take the rest of the day off.
