“You just don’t offshore the best jobs …” –

Frank Koller, interviewed on CBC Radio One’s Sunday Edition

No sooner had MrK given me a convincing lecture on the bad grammar of many smart, successful people than I get assaulted by precisely what he was talking about. He was railing against the increasingly common practice of morphing verbs into nouns and nouns into verbs. Particularly irksome are brutal constructs like new wells being called “new drills”. One bit of corporate jargon – “bring home the learnings” – really stuck in my craw because the perfectly good word “lesson” was ditched for a grating non-word.

But many people apparently can’t resist the urge to sound clever by using slick sounding Stupidisms of this ilk. Mr. Koller could have just talked about “exporting” jobs, or shipping them off-shore; but that wasn’t good enough. No surprise, because in the same flourish of elocution he also said “there’s a lot of companies doing this”. Yeah, there’s sure a lot of people talking bad English too. Wait until I finish my new write on that topic.
