Yet another historic moment

“We have to seize this historic moment” –

Barack Obama, November 7th, 2009, on his health care initiative

I guess historic moments are a dime a dozen these days. I was searching for the exact quote paraphrased above, couldn’t quite find it, but it turns out the president has been using this rhetoric for some weeks now. There’s no doubt Mr. Obama is expending a lot of political capital on the health care bill(s), but to label a piece of legislation “historic” and ratchet up the verbiage may become counter-productive.

With the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall this week and, amongst other significant milestones, 40 years after the moon landing this year; the word historic, in reference to “Obamacare” sticks in the craw just a little. It’s reminiscent of Paul Martin claiming he would fix healthcare “for a generation”. Hyperbole and over-promising has a way of coming back on you, but Mr. Obama would know about that by now.
