Is this a stupidism I see before me?

“…Othello can be seen as demeaning, in the same terms as what you’re describing African Americans in this literature…” -

Carol Off, Host of CBC Radio One’s As it Happens

On this show [1] Ms Off interviewed Washington State high school teacher John Foley about his difficulty teaching some classics of American literature, like Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird. He would prefer these books be taken off the curriculum because the use of the “N-word” and other archaic language offends his students. Call me a cynic but the first thing that occurred to me was that his students were surely no strangers to offensive language. But anyway…

The quote above comes in a rambling commentary wherein Ms Off describes the entire Shakespearean canon as sexist, and then obliquely implies Othello is an African American. As Mr.K noted, “correct” language has been so completely internalized by such media that somehow Moor blurs with¬†African American. What’s more disturbing is that Ms Off clearly believes most literary classics to be tainted. Where do you go from there?

Thanks to alert reader Rick B. for this one.
