“As Groucho Marx famously said, ‘I wouldn’t belong to a club that wouldn’t have me as a member’” – CBC talking head

I can’t recall exactly which invited “expert” it was who recently let this one slip on Radio One. He was using the quote to criticize some form of social injustice which has also fortunately slipped my memory.

What’s great about this Stupidism is the gentleman not only misquotes Groucho, losing all the humour in the process, but then proceeds to misuse the misquote to make his argument.

For the record, the actual quote was “I don’t care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members”. If the forgotten pundit had wanted a Marx quote on injustice there is a great one.

When told in the 1920′s that his family could visit a certain “exclusive” club but, because they were Jews, they couldn’t use the pool, Groucho came up with a classic. He replied “My children are only half Jewish, can they go in up to the waist?”
